Fasting during ramadan for a non muslic
As-salamu alaykum to all my Muslim friends eid mubarak!
As some of you guys may know last month I set out on a journey of self discovery, a work colleague of mine was fasting for ramadan, even though I'm not particularly religious myself I decided I would join her in the month of ramandan and fast.
This would be my first time actually fasting and in solidarity we usually all fast the last day of the month to show our support.
I went a step further and decided to fast for the whole month. The beginning week of ramadan was tough, I had people asking me why I would do such a thing if I wasn't a Muslim or saying it was stupid; this only made me more determined to carry on, not just to see how I felt at the end of ramadan, but to show people "hey i can do this" you may not think I can but I want to prove you wrong, I want you to concentrate on your own life instead telling me I can't or I shouldn't. I quickly realised no matter what you do in life some people may not have belief in you or in some cases want to see you fail, would it make their life significantly better if you set out to do something but failed? If you have self belief, it shouldn't stop you, no matter how many times people say it's stupid to do what your doing. And this wasn't just about fasting now, this was a mantra to anything in life, if you're determined to do it and have focus and discipline then why not.
Not eating or drinking for the month sounds like an easy thing to do but it's when you actually start is were you physically test your own abilities mentally. During the first 3 days I was so hungry and thirsty, honestly I wanted to cave; and too quote that misogynistic asshole andrew tate, "Your mind must be stronger than your feelings" which goes to show even an idiot can say something noteworthy at least once in his life.
After day 3 had passed a work friend had told me to start a tiktok and to tell others how I am feeling, so they inturn could see my progress. This was a challenge, would people accept what I'm doing and assume I am just doing it with out any alterative motive. Not only that; I'm not that social media tiktok guy. Alas I set out to make videos, not only did I have to prove people in my own life what I was doing was right, but I had to also prove the tiktok admins as most of my videos through the month kept getting taken down for "community guidelines" even after submitting a report saying that was wrong l, only half the videos got reinstated, now I can understand it if I was doing a Rembrandt and doing videos with one tit out but I wasn't, I mean it probably would have made my content a little more interesting, I mean would it though?
Anyway though the support of people on tiktok it helped me continue through the weeks, getting too week three which in fact be the worst week as I had fallen ill, in an endeavour to prove everyone one wrong and not falter I opted to not have water or tablets throughout the day in hindsight maybe not the smartest move but we move on..
Anyway as you could imagine my delight yesterday around 4pm when iram came running in to the warehouse shoting "ollie it's eid tomorrow you don't have to fast any more"
So this was the end, what had I learnt, had people managed to convert me...
In the short answer no; I have not converted fully even though the people of tiktok made a very persuasive argument.. I learnt that water and food isn't just for life. It's something that must be appreciated more and it definitely made me realise how much more water I needed to drink. And that I needed to cut back on fizzy drinks, coffee and alcohol.
This month has been stressful, I've been angry very angry at work colleague and emotionally and physically drained but in the end I feel I have come out the otherside feeling more spiritual and feeling more at peace. I have ao much respect for people who this yearly and wish every one a lovely eid
Mubarak brothers and sisters
